Absztrakt (kivonat)

My dissertation is divided into four sections: sports tourism and recreation, the Olympic Games, sports tourism in Hungary, and the case study. The first is about sports tourism, its categories, definitions, and its development over time. I attempted to explain why it is important both socially and economically, because one, it is about the bonds people form with one another, whether they are participants or spectators, and two, it is one of the best investments because sports tourism attracts the most tourists to a location. In the second part, I attempted to go into further detail regarding how an Olympics is organized, as well as a shorter part dedicated to its history and different varieties. Even though the paper focuses mostly on the Summer Olympics, I intended to highlight the Olympics' diversity by commenting on the numerous editions that provide possibilities for disabled athletes as well as young athletes who can consider the Youth Olympics as a warm-up for the bigger stage. This part prioritized overall game preparation, from bidding to post-game effects. I attempted to explain how the International Olympic Committee selects the host country and what they expect from them. Following that, I discussed what a country can expect financially from hosting the Olympics. The third part is about Hungary’s tourism and sports tourism and its previous bids for the Olympics. 10 years ago, in 2015, the Hungarian Olympic Committee (MOB) and the Assembly of Budapest decided to bid for the 2024 Olympics. Budapest was a strong contender until the \"Nolympic\" campaign started, and in the 2017 referendum, residents of the city voted against hosting the Olympics. Hungary has also hosted a number of major sporting events since these occurrences, starting with the 2017 World Aquatics Championship, the 2020 UEFA European Football Championship, and numerous others. In addition to these, the World Athletics Championship in 2023 will also be in Budapest. Hosting all these events could show that the city has the space and strength for something even bigger. The final part discusses the research methods I employed, which included a case study of previous Olympic Games and an interview with a sports journalist, who I believe has a greater understanding of the topic than the average person. I planned to investigate two Olympics that had differing effects on the countries and places in which they were held. I also wanted these Games to be recent, which is how I ended up at the 2012 London Olympics and the 2016 Rio Olympics. I initially went through the bidding processes to examine how competitive the cities were during the years they were chosen and how certain they were to be chosen. The study went on to assess how popular the Olympics were during those years, how many people visited and how much they spent, what the built and renovated infrastructure consisted of, how it impacted the countries socially and economically, and what their plans were to make it sustainable and if they were successful. At the end, I summarized the study and made proposals for a future Hungarian bid.
