Absztrakt (kivonat)

The world of work has transformed today due to the digital economy. Digital labour platforms are a very significant feature of the digital economy. These platforms help their users from ordering the food while sitting at home, booking a ride for themselves and finding a freelancer who can perform their tasks ranging from as simple as writing an assignment to developing a complex website. All of this is possible because of these digital labour platforms. These platforms are a major source of income, especially for most of the people from developing countries, who rely on these platforms for their income generation. There are also numerous challenges for the workers who are working on these platforms. The main focus of this report is on the rise of the digital labour platforms and the effect of these platforms on the workers whose work is mediated through these platforms. In the literature review section, I have examined about the theoretical part. In this section all the major topics that were relevant to my study were discussed such as the rise of digital labour platforms, what type of work relationship does it offer to its workers. What are the different strategies used by these platforms and how they platforms are changing the traditional practices. The review of the literature was done using various sources such as websites, different articles, already published thesis, library resources and relevant books which was linked to my topic of research. In the methodology section of my study, I discussed about the empirical analysis of the data. I used primary data and secondary data for the research purpose. The research questions were debated, and the goals were established. The data was collected through questionnaire and a structured interview. The interview questions and the questionnaire were generated after critically reviewing the theoretical information. The survey consists of two parts. The questions in the first part are to learn the demographic characteristics of the employees. In the second part, there are questions related to workers experience and the quality of work on digital labor platforms. Finally all the data that was obtained through the interview questions as well as the questionnaire was evaluated and examined. The finding of the survey are discussed in the results and discussion section. The findings have shown that digital work platforms represent the primary source of income for many people. The bulk of employees on this platform are young (under 35 years old) and well-educated. In general women use these platforms less as compared to men. Employees are driven to complete projects/tasks on the web-based platforms to complement their salary from other sources of income, workplace flexibility, or a willingness to work from home, or due to a lack of alternative work options that pay higher than other accessible occupations. One of the major challenge that the workers face on these platforms is the inability to find new tasks. Another common challenge that the workers faced was the constant struggle to maintain good ratings. On the other hand costly subscription plans and commission fees were also a major challenge that the workers faced during their experience as working on these platforms Overall, the study finds that despite of the challenges that these platforms have for its users, they are still preferred by many people. Especially the people from developing countries. The platforms should make some significant changes in their algorithm to make the overall workers experience on these platforms more positive
