Abstract

It is the nature of things for a species to face challenges and humanity is no different. Throughout our history, we encountered and overcame obstacles created by our environment, other species, and many times by our very selves. In the beginning, it was our unparalleled, incredible adaptability that gave us the edge over the situation and allowed us to create a world where the most pressing problems of any given time period are more easily solved. Primitive tools were more efficient in catching prey than our limbs, clothes and fire gave us warmth. Greater communities, walls and specialization provided fertile ground for development. We multiplied, we traded, we created culture and knowledge. We accomplished our tasks faster, stronger, with greater yield – growth became our biological optimum. A few centuries later, we have a quick, easy and comfortable solution for just about every need we can imagine. Surely, to an extraterrestrial being, it would seem that we have created our perfect world – without challenges to face. They could not be further from the truth. We can theorize about our history being progressive, regressive, cyclical or any other pattern, but we cannot deny that challenges have never left our side for a moment – and the ones we are facing today are perhaps the most severe of them all. Of course, our immediate environment barely poses a threat to us anymore. It could be said that we solve problems in a sort of expansive manner, securing safety and prosperity for ourselves, then moving to greater and greater circles: family, friends, work or hobby groups, societies – and finally, the international community. To address the problems of our society of states, we have made attempts of creating an even greater circle – something that could help its members, like a family, a labor union, or a group of friends. However, whether it was a success, is up for debate. International organizations face (and no doubt, sometimes create) their own, very severe challenges that makes us question their claim to existence.
