Absztrakt (kivonat)

My dissertation topic was the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on the Hungarian economy. In the course of my research, I looked at how Hungary's investment environment changed when the regime changed and the country joined the European Union. During my research, I offer the fundamental ideas of FDI, as well as a literature review and explanation of how foreign direct investments work. The following chapters discuss the many consequences that foreign direct investments can have. I analyze how the FDIs strengthening the competition on the home market, what kind of effects it has on the suppliers, what are the implications of the technology, how can the host country benefit from the technical adaptation and last but not least the impact of these investments on services. Then it was examined how Hungary's competitiveness has changed over the last three decades. I discuss how Hungary draws foreign direct investments in the final section of my dissertation. The basic objectives of the investment promotion program are described in the first half of this section, as well as how Hungary might become more appealing to foreign investors. I address a number of issues in these chapters, including how foreign direct investments can affect the economy of the host country, how Hungary's competitiveness has changed after the regime change, and how Hungary can recruit FDIs. My thesis concludes with a complete assessment of foreign direct investment and its impact in Hungary, as well as the problems of attracting investments. Prior to the COVID-19 epidemic, since the change of regime, the Hungarian economy has been characterized by dynamic growth. The Hungarian budget deficit on GDP, the unemployment rate, and the volume of foreign direct investments all reflect this dynamic trend. However, the pandemic and its sad social cost have prompted Hungary to put the brakes on, and economic growth plans have been temporarily thrown to the side. Reduced regional imbalances, proper infrastructure, and a competent workforce are crucial to drawing more foreign capital to the country in terms of the country's economic objectives. Overall, Hungary is a very attractive investment location for international investors due to the country's high development level, highly skilled labor force, and financial and non-financial subsidies. Any such attempt may appear a pipe dream to today's eyes, when it is difficult to focus on topics other than minimising the social and economic damage caused by the coronavirus and the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
