Since 2016, the attention of financial technology in China's financial sector has rapidly increased and has become a hot topic. The vigorous development of financial technology has provided commercial banks with opportunities for transformation, but it has also brought new challenges. Many financial technology companies have cross-border operations and compete with traditional commercial banks for market share. Coupled with China's economic environment changes and the advancement of interest rate market reforms, China's banking industry has encountered development difficulties and continued to shrink profit margins. At the same time, China's commercial banks have problems such as vague strategic planning, serious product homogeneity, low customer stickiness, endless new risks, etc. Therefore, it is imperative for commercial banks to carry out digital transformation in their retail business. Based on summarizing the current digital transformation situation of commercial banks' retail business, this paper analyzes the necessity and existing problems of digital transformation of the retail business of commercial banks in China. It selects China Merchants Bank as a case study to explore the digital transformation of the retail business of commercial banks under the background of financial technology. Firstly, the paper introduces the case study, including the brief introduction of China Merchants Bank and the development of the retail business of China Merchants Bank. Then, it analyzes the digital transformation cases of China Merchants Bank's retail business under the background of financial technology. The paper focuses on the specific measures and corresponding effects of China Merchants Bank's retail business transformation from five aspects: service concept, service channel, product innovation, scientific and technological support, and management system. Through the above analysis, this paper summarizes the successful experience of the transformation of China Merchants Bank. It puts forward corresponding countermeasures and suggestions for the digital transformation of the retail business of commercial banks under the background of financial technology: first, accurate self-analysis and precise strategic positioning; Second, expand business channels and upgrade service intelligence; Third, innovate retail products to meet customer needs; Fourth, increase investment in science and technology and build a talent team; Fifth, improve risk control ability and prevent financial risks. When learning from the successful experience of China Merchants Bank's digital transformation, China's commercial banks can focus on the above aspects, but they can't copy them blindly. They should formulate more suitable transformation schemes combined with their advantages to promote long-term and stable retail business.
