Absztrakt (kivonat)
Impact Investments are an evolving and increasingly popular topic in finance. It involves the allocation of capital into investments, not with the sole purpose of generating a sizeable financial return, but also helps address certain issues of environmental and social nature. Decades ago, the only variables an investor might analyze when considering an investment opportunity, were risk and return – return as the monetary profit the investor might get in exchange of putting his capital at risk. Today, an investor might also analyze the positive impact this investment may create on the environment or humanity. Not too long ago, the only questions an investor might ask him/herself are; what is the expected rate of return on this investment? How long will it take for this investment to pay off? What is the standard deviation on the performance of this investment? While today, the largest asset managers in the world are asking themselves questions such as; can this investment significantly reduce the total carbon emissions in the manufacturing process of this company or industry? Does this company help advance financial inclusion in underdeveloped countries? Does this investment help excluded groups and minorities have greater opportunities? Within the universe of impact investments, this thesis’ focus area are environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) investments. More specifically, what are the recent ESG developments, issues, and innovations in today’s most important industries? and what are market-leaders doing to address these issues? To answer these questions, I used the methods of qualitative research and case studies to provide the reader with a broad, big-picture understanding of the challenges facing some of the world’s most important, and often controversial industries (the auto industry, the asset management sector, and the pharmaceutical industry) and what are the actions taken in these sectors to address said challenges. As the research concluded, these three industries (and many others as well) are facing many of the same environmental and social issues, which need to be addressed with urgency, not only for companies to identify risks and opportunities, but for society to advance towards a more sustainable, equitable, and fair existence on our planet. Companies all over the world, leaders of industries and smaller companies alike, are making enormous investments and commitments, in conjunction with local communities, governments, international organizations, and nonprofits, to battle these issues with a long-term approach, understanding that many of these challenges (i.e. climate change) are very complex, and their solution will need changes in multiple dimensions over the next decades. An encouraging ending to this research, is the evidence that businesses are willing to put aside short-term necessities and join efforts with the public sector, to work together in a long, difficult and uncertain path towards a future where humans can continue to grow and innovate, while peacefully coexisting with nature, and each other.
