Castles are a key element of cultural tourism. After the world wars, most of the castles in Hungary were left in a state of disrepair and neglect, their owners having fled the country and become state property. Western countries quickly started to renovate and exploit them, while in England many tourist castles are still privately owned. This paper explores the differences in the operation, services, financing, and history of private and state-owned castles, and examines the two countries' film tourism and its influence on the use of castles as filming locations. A privately owned castle in England and a state-owned castle in Hungary are analyzed and compared from a cultural and operational point of view. The paper analyses the services and facilities offered by the sites, examine visitor opinions and collects data via Netnography. The most recent 100 reviews and the social media platforms of the castles were examined. Since the paper includes both quantitative research method and qualitative data analysis the applied research method will be mixed method. The results showed that in the case of the Castle of England, there was a lot of positive feedback about the presence of the castle owners and film tourism was a huge motivation factor. In Hungary, film tourism does not attract as much interest, is not closely linked to the image of tourist attractions, and castle culture is not as developed as in England. The Hungarian example is considered by visitors to be more outstanding in terms of architecture and as a museum. The Castle program, launched in 2013, helps the development of Hungarian castle culture through many renovations. The situation of the Hungarian castle tourism seems to be improving, the Hungarian castles that started from a disadvantaged position are developing nicely, although there is a lack of major investors. In England, the privately-owned castles are popular, the presence of the castle owners can be decisive, the social importance of the noble titles creates an aristocratic cult of the castles, which unfortunately is not so significant in our country.  In the film industry and in the case of castles as film locations, it is also noticeable that our country is still only a 'location double' on the film tourism map, which can have a major impact on a tourist attraction abroad.
