Abstract

Tourism industry in the pre-pandemic time was one of the fastest and steadiest growing industries in the world. As it was the case for many destinations throughout the world, the number of international visitors in Russia and in Hungary reached have its peaks. The domestic market had been developing and growing, too. In the regard, it is very significant to understand how destinations are being managed in such circumstances. That is why the term of Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) play a crucial role in the sustainable development of their respective destinations. Thus, the study will analyze the operation of two DMOs in Budapest, Hungary and in Sochi, Russian Federation. Due to the lack of available numerical data, the qualitative methodology was selected for this study and five experts from four organizations have been interviewed to collect such information. Moreover, in order to analyze the communication strategies of the organizations, the website analysis was also conducted. As both tourism destinations are highly important for their respective countries, the study reveals what practices and activities the DMOs implement, how they establish relationships with tourists, local population and businesses and how they impact on the destination’s economy. Practical implications of this work could serve as a good example for further research in the field of Destination Management.
