Absztrakt (kivonat)
At the end of the 1880s, during the early stages of industrialisation, it was widely debated whether companies should invest in social responsibility. This argument has resulted in what is now known as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The public's interest in CSR has risen dramatically in recent years, and individuals are beginning to demand that businesses fulfil social responsibility actions. At the same time, businesses have begun to realize that CSR can be used as a strategy to achieve advantages. CSR is becoming increasingly popular and fashionable among businesses not just all over the world but in Hungary as well. In general, CSR contributes to the development of stakeholder and societal faith and credibility in a company. Many industries have embraced corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a priority, and its scope has expanded from responsible business to strategic decisions. Today CSR must be addressed properly especially in the construction industry because on a long-term and short-term basis, the construction sector has the potential to significantly affect people's mental and physical health. The construction sector is one of the largest in the world, employing over 7% of the global workforce, so the working conditions of building projects could influence millions of individuals. Price competition in the industry can lead to business owners demanding longer working hours and lower salaries, and the nature of the construction activity puts workers in danger of injury and illness if the precautionary measures are not followed. Furthermore, the negative environmental effects should be mentioned. For example, construction significantly contributes to the creation of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, which contribute to global warming. Also, this industry produces long lifetime end products that not just only affect the environment but the health of the residents as well. For all of the above reasons, CSR projects within this industry are concentrated on health, security, and safety on one side, and sustainability on the other. In order to achieve a better knowledge of CSR in the construction sector, I performed a case study on the company Mapei. I would like to gain a deep understanding of why it is important to pay attention to this issue nowadays especially in the construction industry, why Mapei engages in CSR and how they implement CSR activities in the Hungarian market. I will also investigate the answer of how do they strike the right balance between global pressure and local stakeholder expectations. The choice of this research topic can be explained by the curiosity and enthusiasm in connection with sustainability and personal relation with the construction sector.
