Abstract

I was writing my thesis on a related topic to my life, generational change in family businesses. I had already found this problem extremely interesting, but writing my dissertation gave me even more knowledge about it and I recognized how many aspects and dimensions it has. I started my paper with a general introduction, presenting the definition of the topic, its actuality and comparing the related models.Through three distinct firms, I attempted to provide a thorough picture of the features and diverse scenarios of generational shifts in my thesis. I had the opportunity to make more interviews from different companies. In total I have made six interviews separately with the founders and the ones who are planning to take the companies over. Consequently, I could see more situations and different plans regarding to the outcomes of the generational change in families. What made my research even more interesting is that each company has a different plan for the transfer of the company or the decision is still pending.Within this topic I focused on two main issues, the impact of generational change on professionalisation and the extent to the shadow of the founder remains after the handover. I used a method that includes many responders from the same company, which enabled me better understand the current owner's shadow by comparing the perspective of the founders and the successors. On the other hand, the curse has a positive impact on professionalisation, based on my research and interview responses as they have formulated long-term plans in terms of the future goals of the profiles and management styles of the companies. My secondary and primary research has given me a clearer picture of the whole issue and of how companies operate. It also made me aware of the importance of the topic, especially in Hungary where the first wave of generational change is taking place now. Completing my thesis I came to the conclusion that generational transition should be viewed as a new task that needs more attention. Moreover, all successful international achievements should be applied to local small and medium enterprises in order to sustain them and allow them to thrive for numerous generations in Hungary too.
