Hungary and Mexico reestablished diplomatic relations on May 14, 1974. Previously, the countries had had relations since the 19th century when Hungary was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During the Habsburg times, a lot of Hungarian soldiers and their families went to Mexico and many of them settled there.  Later, in the 20th century, with the thawing of international tension, a formalization of the relations, followed by the opening of embassies in each other’s capitals took place. On September 30, 1976, the Embassy of Mexico in Budapest was opened. Since Mexico reestablished diplomatic relations with Hungary, these have been characterized by cordial treatment, and a similarity of principles that guide the foreign policy of both countries prevails. The current ties between the two countries are dynamic and multifaceted, as they include different areas that have allowed them to strengthen their diplomatic relations. The Hungarian cultural presence in Mexico and vice versa has been a bond that has never been fragmented and has been present to a lesser or greater extent over the years. Even in times of tension, there has always been an artistic link that has made diplomatic relations resist not only the changes in economic systems but also the ideologies resulting from the two world wars and their interwar period. Culture, and more specifically cultural diplomacy, has a long history in the foreign policy strategy of Hungary and Mexico. The cultural component in the countries' foreign policy has been an essential factor in positioning their image on the international scene, as well to achieve mutual understanding. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that Cultural Diplomacy between Mexico and Hungary is a field that, although it has a relative impact within the foreign ministries, can help to promote the processes of cultural-national construction abroad. It also seeks to analyze the interference that culture can have in other fields such as economy and politics as a result of this synergy. Additionally, this study seeks to identify areas of collaboration, strengths, and weaknesses, in the cultural practices of both countries to generate tangible benefits for both societies.  Finally, it is expected to highlight the importance of the relationship between Mexico and Hungary through culture, to modernize the legal framework on which the growing mutual demand for the exploration of bilateral opportunities is based.
