Absztrakt (kivonat)
The Coronavirus or COVID-19 is an infectious disease, which has spread across the globe in 2020 and is still ongoing in 2021. It is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and combined with the measures necessary to contain its spread it has a significant impact on everyday life. People are advised or ordered to social distance, use masks and vaccinate themselves. The global economy is subject to one of the greatest recessions, surpassing the financial crisis of 2007-2008. The virus so far was the cause of a significant number of deaths and its long-term effects on health are still being researched. Therefore, countries all around the world implemented different strategies to combat the virus. The COVID-19 pandemic appeared very early in Sweden due to the unlucky coincidence of a woman returning to the country from where the virus originated, Wuhan, China. As the virus slowly spread, the government took a rather unique approach to contain it and dampen its impact on the economy. Instead of implementing lockdowns and restrictions, Sweden’s approach is based on recommendations and guidelines by the Public Health Agency of Sweden (PHAS), putting a significant emphasis on personal responsibility, the like of which is unobserved in developed economies. With this research, I am hoping to explore key differences between Sweden and other countries that reacted to the pandemic by restrictions and lockdowns. The Swedish approach was highly debated and considered very risky in the public eye, understandably so, as the number of COVID-19 related deaths per capita broke the global record several times. This resulted in negative media coverage, due to which the government acknowledged that the situation was mishandled and a different strategy should have been implemented but stuck to its strategy. Since the vaccination became publicly available and the vast majority of the population became fully vaccinated, the Swedish death toll and infection rate remained notably low. During my research, I aimed to find answers for the following questions: 1. How did Sweden perform economically before the pandemic? 2. What is the Swedish population like, how did the virus spread across the country? 3. What restrictions were implemented and did they change as time passed? 4. How did the Swedish population react to said restrictions? 5. How did the pandemic affect Sweden’s economy and how do these results reflect when compared to other countries and global averages? 6. Did other Scandinavian countries handle the crisis better? 7. How did the pandemic impact vulnerable groups such as the elderly and immigrants? In Sweden’s unique case, my goal is to find out more about the Swedish response, and what effect the policies implemented may have. To realize meaningful answers about how the pandemic unfolded in Sweden’s case, how it affected the population and economy, how the Swedish government reacted, how the Swedish approach is viewed in the public eye and if it is an appropriate way of handling the pandemic, I analysed various studies, researches, statistical data and publications.
