Abstarct: This composed research seeks to advance knowledge about how the legislative and regulatory framework of the automotive industry have changed due to the monstrous diesel emission scandal which broke out in 2015 and the weight of which is still carried by the sector. The thesis is intended to guide through the course of change by introducing the key actors, legislations and triggering factors which have led to the establishment of the current system. It explains the timeline of the transformation step-by-step from the diversly developing automotive markets and the creation of the regulating legislative framework of the United States and the European Union. It summarizes the details and immediate consequences of the violations committed by the Volkswagen AG. The comprehensive analysis was intended to find the coherence between infringements and changes implemented by using cause-and-effect methodology. The numerous legal lawsuits filed, and disputes emerged show the specific gaps between the laws put in force prior to the ‘Volkswagen Dieselgate’ and the ones enforced in the following years. These focus points enable the comparison between the two legal framework pointing out the deriving amendments. The study is based on both primary and secondary data available, such as laws, expert reports, research projects, wide range of journals and news articles written on the issues arisen in the scope of the topic. All gathered information are public and justified, as laws, emission standards, testing procedures and the information about the different lawsuit were made available by the authorities. Due to the fact that the large-scale process has shaped the last few years of transportation, a great variety of recent and reliable source can be accessed on the internet in relationship with the case and allow researchers to compare collected data from different databases. While there has been a significant progress in the alteration, still running lawsuits and disputes, as well as new technologies in development can enhance additional changes in the system allowing other researchers to extend this piece of work. The conducted research might also help the audience to take an insight into the era of the combustion engines and to understand the principles of the transition period, when fully electric and other eco-friendly cars will dominate the automotive market.
