This thesis will explain why the 2013 CAP reforms failed young farmers between 2010 and 2020. To explain the background of this thesis, we will be looking at how the Common Agricultural Policy was born and how it evolved during the years. The thesis will shortly introduce the cycles of the CAP and its reforms. Later we will look at the Hungarian agricultural sector and its evolution. In the following chapters, the thesis will compare Hungary’s agriculture before the EU, starting from 1989 until 2003 and after joining the EU from 2004 to 2019. The research will delve into the development of the Hungarian agricultural sector’s output value and export during the last three decades to describe how the accession to the EU has developed the Agri-sector of Hungary. To underline the effects of the 2013 CAP reforms on young farmers, this thesis will look at specific quantitative and qualitative indicators to show how the number of young farmers has developed over the years. The quantitative indicators we will be looking at are how young farmers grew in the analysed ten years. Under qualitative indicators, we will look at how the rejuvenation of agriculture does not seem to occur; instead, it has worsened since 2010. In the later chapters, we will also look at agricultural education as an indicator of the popularity of agriculture and what the current farm managers think about the generation change.Following the history and the quantitative and qualitative development of young farmers. This thesis will also show the insight gained during the interview I had with a young farmer acquaintance of mine and his father. The question centres around the CAP and its support system, how the last decade influenced young farmers, and whether they see them as a necessary and beneficial part of the Hungarian agricultural sector.
