Absztrakt (kivonat)

India is a secular, multicultural and multilingual country where different people from different religion, culture, and language live together in harmony. This shows that India has accepted everyone but when it comes to the equal rights and opportunities of women and girls it is a whole different story. Women in India enjoyed equal status to men in the ancient period, but this also changed over the years with the evolution of new religious scripture, the emergence of different religions and also the invasions from the different rulers. The status of women changed from first class citizen to second class over these periods. Evil practices such as child marriage, sati (burning alive with dead husband), purdah system, no education, prohibition of widow remarriage are some of the examples of the status of women in ancient India. With the British colonization women's status changed a bit but the situation was still not the best. After independence from British rule equal rights and opportunities were enshrined in the constitution of India. Many laws and policies were initiated but the status of women still hasn't changed yet. Gender inequality is one of the main issues India is dealing with even in today's time. Socio-cultural factors play an important role in the deteriorating status of women. The challenges women and girls in India face include access to education, basic health services, economic opportunities and also lack of decision-making power. Women and girls also face gender -based violence within and outside the house. The government of India has made efforts to improve the status of women by initiating gender based schemes. Also India has been part of international conventions supporting women and in 2015 they signed the sustainable development goals (agenda 2030). The main purpose of my research is to find out how socio-cultural factors impact the status of women, and what changes have been observed after the implementation of SDGs in the national agenda of India.
