Absztrakt (kivonat)

The new global agenda of sustainable development, which strives for the preservation of the environment for future generations, cannot be achieved without action for environmental sustainability. The study, therefore, examines the role of news media in the environmental sustainability of ASEAN countries. Based on McQuail’s development media theory and Rogers and Dearing’s agenda-setting theory, this study postulates that the news media can work together with the government to set the agenda for advancing environmentally sustainable development goals. In aligning with this national, regional, and global objective, the news media should thus be able to overcome press restrictions and continue fulfilling its role to serve the public interest in a less politically-oriented, but a development-oriented capacity. In order to inform the research, the study employs nine expert interviews and a content analysis of three leading online English-based news sources from high, medium, and low environmentally performing countries in the ASEAN region–namely, Singapore’s The Straits Times, the Philippines’ Philippine Daily Inquirer, and Vietnam’s The Saigon Times. Specifically, the research analyzes (1) expert perspectives regarding the “best” practices in environmental journalism; and (2) certain major news media outlets’ content and actions toward raising public awareness and concern of environmental issues. Findings demonstrate that the country with the highest environmental performance out of the three countries has the studied news site, which exercises most effectively the perceived “best” practices in environmental journalism and goes beyond writing and reporting the news. The study’s results, therefore, provide evidence of a positive correlation between the degree of focus on environmental news in a country’s news agenda and its environmental performance.
