Absztrakt (kivonat)
Dark tourism has passed into the language and study of tourism since its first designation in 1996 (Lennon and Foley, 1996 and Seaton 1996). It is now established as a term to designate those sites and locations of genocide, holocaust, assassination, crime, or incarceration that have served to attract visitors. This paper examined the potential for the development of dark tourism destinations in Central and Eastern Europe from a management and operations perspective, analyzing data gathered from tourism providers. As tourism is increasingly being integrated into national, regional, and local level planning, and new approaches to encourage sectors such as dark tourism emerge, this study proposes development approaches addressing issues of ethical presentation, quality infrastructure, site preservation, appropriate visitor behavior, and marketing and promotion to be established while being viewed from visitor and resident perspectives.
