Absztrakt (kivonat)

Seeking human connection is a quintessential part of the human existence and overall well-being. It can be devastating when the ability to communicate and connect to one another is no longer there to the extent people have grown accustomed to. Therefore COVID-19 not only affects our lives as a physical health crisis, but it also has mental health consequences. Besides people losing their livelihood, their homes and loved ones, they had to adapt to some unique circumstances in which communication (especially face-to-face) was no longer possible the way it was before. These changes heavily impact people's daily lives when it comes to work, school or the way they can reach their friends and family. Luckily, most people have access to the internet nowadays and the online channels provide enhanced opportunities for individuals to connect with their peers and loved ones, as well as for institutions to have a productive conversation with their students or employees.    I chose this topic because I wanted to embrace the opportunity that was given by this unprecedented situation caused by the pandemic. Tragic as it is, it gives us the chance to examine technology‐related behaviour in a global crisis. Besides the relevance of the topic at this time and age, it truly fascinates me how people adapted to this situation and what are the issues caused by the changes in communication. I am especially interested in the psychological issues, mainly shifting the focus onto anxiety.    Since people are so diverse and all come from various backgrounds, I needed to find a connecting link that can serve as a baseline for the research and this way provide a more cohesive outcome. Therefore, the current study exclusively examines the behaviour of students and seeks to shed light on the ways they managed to overcome the lack of in person communication caused by the inability to come together or attend school physically. To be more exact, the project seeks out the changes in the amount of physical and online communication, the devices students choose to use and the applications they prefer to use for their private and school-related communication. Additionally, this project investigates the emotional response of the students to the changes that occurred in the ways they communicate regarding their studies and their private lives.    The study employs a survey to get a better understanding of the difference in communication habits before and after the start of the pandemic and the effects these changes had on the mental health of the students. The participants were surveyed online, and they were granted anonymity.
