Absztrakt (kivonat)

The aim of the paper is to analyze the GVC participation of Indonesia in different ways and to provide evidence to examine the position of Indonesia within the GVCs. Mainly, it is focused on the factors that influence the participation of the GVCs, main sectors that generate value-added, foreign trade characteristics of Indonesia along with the challenges and opportunities due to the global health crises. The thesis compares Indonesia with the Philippines to show the specificities of the GVCs location in the empirical part. The data and research work from the international organizations including WTO Trade-In Value-Added statistics, OECD, World Bank, and ADB, etc., were used to compare Indonesia and the Philippines’ economic situations and GVC participation. Indonesia’s participation in GVCs has changed significantly in the last decade and the paper adds insights about the COVID-19 in Indonesia. It could be seen from the thesis that the data and graphs had kept proving that Indonesia is a self-sufficient country generally dependent on domestic value-added. The content of foreign value-added has greatly decreased in the last decade and the participation of Indonesia was more involved in upstream activities and simple GVCs. It can be concluded that the forward participation dominates and Indonesia is a supplier of value-added embedded on mostly primary products. Usually, countries with abundant natural resources like Indonesia tend to have a high concentration on primary products. The main export industries of the countries were quite different. For Indonesia, it were food and beverages, wholesale and retail, and mining while for the Philippines the industries were computer and electronics, transport and storage, and other business services.
