This essay focuses on the reasons why the Great Firewall was created, its role, and its impact (both positive and negative) on the development of Chinese businesses. The Great Firewall has existed for around 20 years, yet many people avoid talking about it due to political reasons. The positive effects of the Great Firewall on mainland China need to be recognized because of the country's unique political system and a large population base. Although the negative political aspects cannot be ignored, that is not the main subject of this paper, which can be further discussed later in another study. However, the Great Firewall shouldn’t be demonized. Based on Chinese internet development since 2000, we cannot predict how long the Great Firewall will remain in place and whether it will one day be knocked down. Therefore, it has a continuing effect on the development of Chinese companies. The perception about it needs to be constantly updated based on facts. This paper analyzes the journey of Chinese technology giants as they grow under the shelter of the Great Firewall which now become world-class companies. They have been compared with the world's leading information technology companies as well. This paper also focuses on the analysis of TikTok, the first Chinese application to go global depending on its own development and algorithm, and how the Great Firewall imposes both positive and negative influences on it. TikTok can be a lesson for other Chinese companies because I believe TikTok will not be the only Chinese creative product that can grab a share of the global market. This paper was written based on sources from both Chinese and foreign points of view, such as 《我们的防火墙》 by Li YongGang, and Censored: Distraction and Diversion Inside China’s Great Firewall by Margaret E. Roberts. Both local and foreign media posts were adopted. A qualitative methodology was mainly applied throughout this paper by analyzing data from various sources.
