The Silk Road Economic Belt, referred to as the "the Belt", is a regional economic cooperation strategy promoted by Premier Li Keqiang of The State Council of the People's Republic of China to other countries during his overseas visits. Starting from mainland China, the silk Road on land ended in Europe. First, it reached Europe through Central Asia and Russia. Second, from Xinjiang through Pakistan to the Indian Ocean, Central Asia and West Asia to the Persian Gulf and Mediterranean coastal countries. China is trying to develop new economic partnerships with these countries and regions, with plans to strengthen infrastructure along the roads, absorb China's excess production capacity and labor force, secure China's energy and food supplies, and spur the development of the western region. The 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, referred to as the "the Road", follows the maritime Silk Road. From China's coastal ports through the South China Sea to the Indian Ocean, extending to Europe, or from China's coastal ports through the South China Sea to the South Pacific. The main routes of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road include: Quanzhou, Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Haikou, Beihai, Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Colombo, Calcutta, Nairobi, Athens and Venice. To develop economic cooperation between mainland China and countries in Southeast Asia, South Asia, Middle East, North Africa and Europe. It has been six years since the BRI was launched, which makes us wonder how it's going. How China and Europe's trade ties have strengthened after years of BRI construction. The following research question will be discussed in this thesis: What are the opportunities and challenges for the growth of the EU Belt and Road Initiative? The first section discusses the aims of the BRI for both China and the EU through literature review, inductive research and a multidisciplinary approach. The second section explains the current stage of the growth of the BRI in the EU and the benefits that the BRI has brought to China and the EU so far. In Part Three and Part Four, the prospects and challenges for BRI growth in the EU will be studied; in Part Fifth, the challenges of BRI development in the EU will be addressed. After that, conclude some suggestions that China should take in order to boost more BRI-based cooperation between China and the EU.
