Absztrakt (kivonat)

The world currently faces COVID-19 as one of the largest pandemics. Tourism is one of the most damaged sectors by pandemics. As members of the industry, travel agents and tour operators, have been struggling the most since 2020 outbreak. This study aims to study how travel agencies and tour operators dealt with previous SARS and MERS outbreaks and with the current 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, it inspects on the government’s responses and how travel businesses cooperate with it. To test out the hypotheses, 3 DMCs in Hungary and Vietnam were interviewed online. The interviewees were sent out invitation email for an online video call. During the interview, the representative of three companies answered questions related to how they are dealing with COVID-19 and their tactics. The result showed that DMCs were negotiating with suppliers as the nature of the travel package is to prepay, these companies were struggling to receive the refund.  They also expressed the government supports was not enough nor was easy to access as to instructions were not clear or published. A recommended solution was to create in advance a basic continuity plan and guidelines for operating the company during pandemics. However, they do believe the tourism industry will recover one day and in order to do that, they need to provide safety and health-centred services and packages which they are working together with suppliers. Not only working with suppliers, travel agencies and tour operators need government supports, from financial such as tax reduction to destination marketing. This study may help travel agencies and tour operators to improve their perception of pandemics and provide some valuable solutions for the current and future outbreaks.
