Absztrakt (kivonat)

Tourism is one of the most valuable industries in the world and few environments are more important for tourism than coastal zones. The purpose of this study is to evaluate how Marine Protected Areas (MPA) affect the coastal and marine tourism industry and the local community of a small island in the Philippines. A case study on Mantigue Island and Nature Park, a tourist attraction that is at the same time a marine protected area, was undertaken.  The research was designed to determine the socio-economic impacts of MPAs, examine the perceptions and satisfactions of tourism stakeholders with regards to MPAs, identify sources of tension between stakeholders, and provide recommendations for the continuous improvement of the marine park. Interviews from nine tourism stakeholders acquainted with the park were documented and analysed through a qualitative thematic analysis approach. The study reveals the two main themes generated from the research analysis: the positive and negative implications of marine protected areas. These implications come in the form of economic boost, tourist satisfaction, increased environmental importance, informed local community, social tension, and increased regulation. The research highlights the importance of dialogue between key stakeholders and that collaborative effort in community-based MPAs is crucial to the success of the coastal and marine tourism industry. Reassessment of the MPA rules and regulations, reorganisation, and increased transparency of the fees and revenue generated by the tourism activities in the protected area is recommended.
