Absztrakt (kivonat)

I choose the European Union and China economic relations analyzes for my dissertation topic, where the main focus on the Chinese Foreign Direct Investment in the EU. I thought this theme is interesting, because on the one hand, China is today’s second-largest economy and country, and on the other hand, the European Union is my Union as well.             In the first part of the dissertation, I would introduce the Chinese history and their leaders from the beginning until 2012. That time was a turnaround point in China's life however, Xi Jinping becomes the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, Chairman of the Central Military Commission and the President of the People’s of Republic of China. China’s leadership style changed with him. The economic policies have become more dynamic than previous times. He started to work on “the future of China”, with bilateral agreements, trade agreements, 5-year-plans, the Belt and Road Initiative, the Made in China 2025 strategy, and the 4.0 industrial revolution plan.  Also, a new communication style was born under his power. He was the first Chinese leader, who acted as the Western leaders, he had a New Year’s Eve speech on television. In the second part of my dissertation, I would like to introduce how the Chinese economy was growing supported by data, future plans and strategies. China has become the world's second-largest economy based on its Gross Domestic Product (GDP), after the United States, and took over second place from Japan (they are still in third place). The main part is focused on the Foreign Direct Investment, its definition, FDI on China point of view, the EU and China bilateral trade flows, the EU and China investment relations, Chinese FDI in the EU and the top four investment destinations, such as the UK, Germany, France and Italy. Based on Foreign Direct Investments China has become a major investor, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) data. Acceding to the Global Investment Tracker (American Enterprise Institute) data, Chinese investment has grown in the past decades and sharply increased in the past couple of years. While in the 2000s, their ambitions were to focus on the more sustainable economic growth, innovation, and then move up on the Global Value Chain (GVC). After the financial crisis the focus was on the GDP growth. In 2016 they launched another five-year plan whose aim was to move up in the value chain through modern-innovative infrastructure and by the end of this period to improve and create a Health Action Plan. Also, during this time being, they launched a 10-year-plan, Made in China 2025, which means they would like to be a leading manufacturing country by 2025. I saw a super-fast economic growth with a lot of changes, strategies and future plans. In my opinion is that China needs the EU to achieve their aims and goals. Therefore my research question was: What are China's motivations for Foreign Direct Investment in the European Union, and how do they look by country and by investment area?
