ABSTRACT The relationship between China and Hungary has been developing for decades in the field of economic, cultural, and social relations. Since the political transition in the 1990s in Hungary, the two countries have concluded several bilateral agreements that promote economic relations. In 2012, Hungary announced its Eastern Opening Strategy with the aim of the development of the Hungarian economy by increasing economic activities with Asian countries, especially with China. In 2013, Xi Jinping presented China's new significant foreign policy program the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). This is a global large-scale strategy aimed at developing infrastructure, economic, industrial cooperation, and financial integration. That would create a new Eurasian continent through a connectivity between Asia and Europe. Hungary is part of the BRI through the Chinese sub-regional initiative, the 17 + 1 Cooperation. In this initiative, the reconstruction of the Budapest-Belgrade railway line has a prominent role, which is a very important project for China, because Chinese goods could quickly reach Western Europe from the Greek port of Piraeus through Serbia and Hungary. Contracts have already been signed and reconstruction work will begin soon. In recent years, a lot can be heard about the success of Sino-Hungarian cooperation through the Hungarian media, that the relationship between the two countries has never been so good, or that China is the number one trading partner of Hungary. Therefore, the Chinese-Hungarian economic indicators, such as export, import, and trade balance data were analyzed in detail. The research results show that the statements made in the media cannot be substantiated. China is not among the TOP 5 trading partners of Hungary. Opening policy in the light of China does not show a significant development in terms of trade. Import from China of the previous years showed better results, there was a faster pace of development. In terms of investment, China lags behind South Korea and Japan, half as many investments coming to Hungary from China as from the other two East Asian countries separately. The large amount of information about Chinese-Hungarian successes which is coming from the media refers to a political statement rather than a factual statement, in turn, may advance the development of Hungarian-Chinese relations in the future.
