Student Name: BASEM MUNIR EL-ASSAF Neptun Code: F3EIKB   The Impact of Natural Gas Exports on the Economy and Strategic Decisions of Russia   Summary: Economics of natural gas in Russia have an impact on many Russian strategic decisions where exports of natural gas represent a significant part in the total Russian exports. Russia, with its huge reserves of natural gas and extended infrastructure of gas delivery pipelines is considered as one of the main producers and exporters of natural gas in the world. The growing role of natural gas, the environment-friendly energy resource, is expected to continue in the future overcoming other fossil fuels and Russian gas production is expected also to continue on the long run due to the increasing growth in demand in addition to the Russian capability to continue producing and exporting gas on the long-term beside the high intention to increase gas export which forms an important part of the country’s income. Europe is a huge energy and gas consumer depends mainly on Russian gas supplies. On the other hand Russian gas exports are mainly destinated to Europe and there is a lot of talk about the dubious gas relationship between Russia and Europe. This intertwined trade relationship in a number of occasions have led to political interference as Europe look forward to better energy security less dependent on Russia and Russia aims to protect its economic interests untouched and examine any new project competing with its gas exports from national security point of view. Some previous pioneer literatures concerned with energy and gas affairs argued that the relation between economics of Russian gas and politics is dubious while others mentioned to the red colour of gas that heats Europe. In this regard, this study tries to find if the Russian natural gas exports is economically important enough to motivate the Russian politics to interfere beyond its borders and will statistically examine, the relation between gas exports and the Russian economy. In order to achieve this objective, the study follows two approaches: The first part will be abstracted from literature reviews and reputed data sources to prove that other international gas players represent real threat to Russian gas exports. in this frame, the study browses Russian natural gas projects, reserves, existing markets, key customers, pricing and contracting mechanisms in addition to the alternative projects and the Russian relations related to economics of gas with EU and US. Later, the study reviews the new forecasted gas fields and projects in the East-Mediterranean and Middle East conflicting with Russian interests. The second part a quantitative research approach is conducted to statistically prove the importance of Russian natural gas exports on the Russian economy by exploring the relation between gas exports and the Russian economy. The study examine the significance of the relation between the volume of Russian gas exports in USD and Russian GDP annual growth% as an indicator of the Russian economy in a time frame of 19 years from 2000 to 2018 and came to a conclusion that there is a significant and moderately strong correlation between annual gas export values and the Russian annual GDP growth%. This statistically prove that the Russian exports of gas have a significant effect on Russian economy and hence Russia has the motivation to protect its gas exports from declining in order to maintain its GDP annual growth.By this means, Europe has to bear in mind when it comes to EU energy security the Russian interest to resist and instead of drifting to zero-sum solutions, both parties have to better regard the positive thinking considering the values of well-being
