Absztrakt (kivonat)

Japan has been going through a transition period. The aim of this study was to explore the main economic and social factors behind these changes and to analyse their effects on gender issues. (e.g.: situation of the female labour force) For this analysis the study used a considerate amount of primary and secondary data collection methods. The secondary data analysis was mainly employed through research process which was called to outline the current state of the Japanese economy and society. While the primary data analysis was applied for conducting further examination on the changing value orientations. The research showed that the main factors which are hindering women are the mostly the following: scare number of nursery-cares, long working hours, traditional values (e.g.: should stay at home and take care of her family) and lack of role models for young people. Moreover, it was explained that there is a need for change in terms of gender roles as well. By sharing the responsibilities around the child and dividing the housework within the families would ease the situation of women. The overall analysis of the study represented that the situation of female population is improving by time (e.g.: gaining a bigger proportion of the labour force), however because of the remaining roots of traditional values and the high masculinity (rigid corporate system), they are still facing some difficulties in terms of fulfilling managerial positions and the gender gap between males and females are still significant. Although, the current Japanese administration (Prime Minister Abe) has noticed the importance of what a higher participation rate of the female population could mean for the Japanese economy, especially with the rapidly greying population and the shrinking work force and now is taking measures to encourage the female population to ‘shine’.
