In the following dissertation, the author will discover the still mainly undiscovered subject and effects of poverty tourism. Poverty tourism is mainly known as slum tourism around the world, although depending on which area we are talking about. The subject of poverty tourism is not widely discussed (or even well known to be honest). There aren’t many researches available in the area, only a few academic publications and a handful of PhD papers have been published on the internet so far. The topic and discussion of poverty tourism is relatively new, although it affects tens of millions of people’s lives on an everyday basis. With the rise of popularity in backpacking travel to previously unpopular destinations, the doors have opened to discovering new destinations, new tours and new way of travelling. Most of these backpackers are very mindful of their surroundings, want to support local communities, and are open minded to experience new cultures. Slum tourism is a specific niche travel segment within international-, and responsible/sustainable tourism. The author’s goal is to discover this subject and the controversy in depth and present it in an easily understandable and captivating way, where the reader, regardless of age, sex, background or financial status can meet a new, previously unknown ‘world’.The author’s goal was to prove whether this type of tourism is sustainable, and if the long term benefits (such as development and improving quality of life) outweigh the short term damages (like making the residents feel vulnerable and exploited).
