Abstract: Since 1980, Butler published his well-known theory — Tourism Area Life Cycle (TALC), there have been many articles studying the life cycle in the tourism industry concerning his model. This thesis presents the basic concepts about the Tourism Area Life Cycle and its extension to analyze the life cycle of Chongqing as a tourism destination. Combining with the analysis of the tourism carrying capacity in Chongqing, the current situations and potentials in the environment and tourism-related capacities can be briefly understood. Given that, events occurred in China and Chongqing will be listed under the guidance of Regulation theory, which substantially affected the tourism development. At the conclusion part, brief recommendations and strategic planning for the local tourism`s development and the further researches will be given based on the former analysis. Chongqing as one of the four municipal cities in China, it is connecting the west and east of China, as well as the starting point of the Belt and Road Initiatives. Thus, acquiring the current stage that Chongqing is going through is so crucial in case having an insightfully strategic planning for the future decline stage in tourism life cycle. The objective of this thesis is to examine the applicability of these theories in a China`s city, as China is still a young and vibrant market in the tourism industry with its strong Chinese characteristics and special national situations, so it is necessary to exert the theories jointly considering China`s national background.
