Absztrakt (kivonat)

There is a hot debate in recent scientific literature about the role of globalisation with regards to development. Is there a causal effect or at least some connection between the two? Which process influences which, and in what way? There are many different views on this subject that will be presented in this work. After introducing the scientific background, the paper will try to clarify the picture by using empirical methods. In order to make the connection visible between the globalisation and the development process of a country, the best solution is to use indices, quantitative measurements. My aim is to introduce the most important measurement methods and indices of globalisation and development level of a certain country. In order to make it visible how globalised a given economy is I will use the data of WTO referring to international trade, tariffs etc. The different globalisation indices can be very useful in this work (KOF Index, New Globalisation Index, CSGR, Maastricht Globalisation Index, G-index etc.) To measure the development level of countries I would like to examine the database of World Bank, the UN Development Program and World Happiness Report. After studying the methodology the paper is going to provide a brief overview of the globalisation process on historical level. Following the long-term overview we will take a closer look on the development process of the last three decades. What happened to the development gap between rich and poor nations according to data? As we have introduced the general process of globalisation as a world-wide phenomenon, we will examine some particular details and segments of the development of the last decades. Some countries and some regions of the world obviously benefited from the globalisation, whilst others were left behind. The comparison of the regions with different performance will show us the main characteristics of the development. For instance Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia perform significantly differently. As a conclusion, the paper will sum up the findings of the comparative analysis and tries to put the data in time context. What happened in the last three decades and what can be foreseen?
