Abstract

Abstract Mongolia, a landlocked and a sparsely populated country that borders with two great powers Russia and China. Throughout history Mongolia’s external relations were greatly dependent on its two immediate neighbours, however, today Mongolia pursues a unique foreign “third-neighbour” policy that facilitates strengthened international cooperation and bilateral relations with Western democratic countries. The idea of “third-neighbour” refers to countries beyond Russia and China. Therefore, it is the delicate act of expanding ties with other countries while maintaining friendly relations with Russia and China. The purpose of the study is to extensively discuss and highlight the importance of Mongolia’s foreign policy objectives and historical attempts that have modernized and shaped the unique “third-neighbour” policy. The study also underlines how Mongolia is increasing its international profile through active engagement in security and peacekeeping operations, internationally and regionally. The research method is based on the analysis of strategic documents, secondary data, government information, academic articles, analytical reports and interview. In turn, this thesis concludes how Mongolia is successfully pursuing its foreign policy by balancing both its immediate and “third-neighbours”, when in fact our “third-neighbours” are itself in state of crisis with our immediate neighbours. Keywords Mongolia, landlocked country, third-neighbour, foreign policy, security, balancing act, strategic partnership
