Abstract

The Canary Islands is one of the most visited destinations in the EU. According to the data published by the Eurostat in 2017 the Canary Islands were the most visited region both in Spain and in the EU with approximately 104.4 million guest nights in tourist accommodations. With the 104.4 million guest nights the Canary Islands came before several Spanish, French and other destinations. (EUROSTAT, 2017) This data clearly indicates the potential of tourism in this region. According to the available data 77.8% and 87.9% are returning guests out of the Canary Islands’ arrivals. (PROMOTUR, 2017) My first hypothesis is that the reason why most of the tourists are returning to the Canary Islands is because of the great quality of the offered products in the region. I would like to prove that this hypothesis is true. The quality of products is reflected in the high tourist return rate and the satisfaction provided by the tourists after visiting the island. Every island is similar but different at the same time and this is a great point for tourists as they want to have the same good experience, but still in a bit different environment and the region of the Canary Islands provides this security. Even though the Canary Islands has a significant number of arrivals the local economies of the islands have issues with enough money getting into the local economy. My second hypothesis suggests that even though the region’s success is somewhat provided by the great quality of the hotels, as most of the tourists books all-inclusive service at the residence of stay, they do not leave the hotel to spend money outside, because they have all the needed catering and additional services in the hotel. This dynamic results in less money spent in the local businesses and introduced into the local economy, causing slower development in the tourism industry of the Canary Islands.
