Absztrakt (kivonat)

The main aim of this dissertation is to study the impact of European colonization on the Levant area (Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, and Transjordan) between 1922 and 1948 and its influence on the present-day educational system of Palestine and Transjordan. The reason behind choosing this specific period of time is due to the fact that the two decades examined had been major turning points in redrawing the region’s map and reshaping its social and political conditions. The paper aims to explore the influence of Western powers on the educational system in the Levant in West Asia, with a glance at the Ottoman occupation preceding the European rule, and then it compares the past with the present situation. The study seeks to evaluate the religious, political, and social segregation of the communities in the Levant. In the first section, some background information and thoughts on colonialism are discussed. Afterwards, there is an in-depth study of the educational system during the Ottoman era, the British and French mandatory period, and the current status, with special focus on Palestine and Transjordan. The final section of the paper studies all the forces that shaped the region and made it what it is today. The methodology followed in the research combines both qualitative and quantitative elements. The exploration of the topic was based upon personal communications, interviews as primary sources, as well as on the scientific literature, history books and journals related to the topic, as secondary sources. All these were supplemented by data collection and document analysis. In brief, this paper identifies the shapers of today’s social behaviour, politics, and religious ideologies, in a way recognizing the historical background of the region and studying its present.
