In this study, it was attempted to identify the characteristic features of Russian outward FDI. At the same time, the specifics of the outward direct investment development are analyzed primarily in terms of enhancing the competitiveness of the domestic economy and its sustainable development. Also, this study attempts to define the stage of development of the country according Investment Development Path of Dunning. As a result of research, it can be said that export motives, the dominance of energy monopolies, the ways and spheres of capital application, the special role of the state differ Russian OFDI from cross-border transactions and projects carried out abroad by companies from developed countries. Moreover, massive outflow of capital from Russia, primarily in offshore jurisdictions, has become a serious problem for the development of the national economy. The nature of the use of offshore jurisdictions by Russian businesses is twofold. This implies a distinction between criminal operations and illegal schemes in the financial sphere, or legal optimization of entrepreneurial activity. Furthermore, the study showed that traditional theories of FDI did not fully take into account the peculiarities of the evolution of the investment expansion of Russian companies. In this regard, it is necessary to modify the existing conceptual approaches. An analysis is needed with a focus on the country characteristics of the origin of these MNCs and their relationship with the state.
