ABSTRACT ECONOMIC-SOCIAL IMPACT OF SYRIAN REFUGEES IN TURKEY, A CASE STUDY OF SYRIAN REFUGEES IN BURSA CITY This research aims to identify and evaluate the economic and social impacts of Syrian refugees on one of the geographical regions, under special conditions, displaced persons and also in the host community in Bursa under certain conditions. For this reason, the study explores the impact on specific social and economic problems such as health and service situation, housing status, employment status, expenditure and income rate. Two different questionnaires were applied to 200 respondents with randomly selected participants – both Syrian Refugees and Local Respondents- to reach the research objectives. At the same time, 53 interviews were conducted with 30 Syrian Refugees and 20 local persons, as well as 3 interviews with representatives of non-governmental organizations. Moreover, the participant observation technique was used to allow for better analysis and interpretation of the results. The research has unclosed that the movement of Syrian Refugees have affected the investigated economic and social aspects negatively. The housing situation of Syrian refugees has changed. Most refugees stay in rented houses. In particular, the education of children has been adversely affected and their education levels have lagged behind. Syrian refugees can benefit from health services such as local people. For this reason, a positive result in terms of health service can be mentioned. The employment situation was adversely affected because the monthly salary of Syrian refugees is much lower than the salary of local employees. Their salary is even lower than the minimum wage of Turkey. However there has been a great development since the first time the refugees arrived, and they are trying to adapt themselves to the local community day by day. Syrian refugee’s presence has some negative impacts on the local society. Decreasing the salaries, caused degradation of social peace and increasing the rental prices can be examples.
