Absztrakt (kivonat)

The international tourism tendencies show that people are looking for more complex experiences during their holiday. Next to the relaxation they would like to learn new skills, broader their perspective and reach a higher state of self-development. To satisfy their newly raising needs the tourism market offers different alternatives. In my research I was focusing on the religion and spirituality related attractions and their appearance on the cultural market. I was analyzing the motivation of these travelers as well as the popularity of the religious and spiritual destinations. I used a mixed-method research design to evaluate the qualitative and quantitative data collected through my primary research. I used content analysis to count the frequency of expressions connected to religion and spirituality within the texts of five cultural travel brochures published in Hungary. At the end of the research I could identify the importance of these fields within the tourism industry and I could set up twelve spiritual categories which help to understand more what attracts people in the spiritual destinations. After receiving information on how spiritual and religion based attractions are used as elements of cultural tours I wanted to examine the situation on the demand side. An online survey was carried out to research the motivation of Hungarian citizens. 157 participants were present in the researched group. The questionnaire was designed according to the results of the content analysis to see how much the spiritual elements used by the travel agencies are appearing among motivations of travelers. The questions were addressed to research the traveling habits of the participants as well as their main purpose of travel, their interest towards spiritual sights and their religious behavior. As the result of the motivation research another impulse was gained supporting the development of spirituality based attractions. I continued by analyzing the religious and spiritual attractiveness of Hungary on the international market. After examining the cultural offers of Spanish, English and German travel brochures I could draw the conclusion that Hungary needs some improvements on these fields of tourism. At the end of my work I listed some Hungarian destinations which could become successful spiritual attractions through minor investments.
