Protection of children during wars, armed conflicts and natural disasters has been always perceived as a moral imperative and a question of international security. Education in emergencies has the main goal of protection of the basic human right to education, development of the learning opportunities and encouraging the overall cognitive, social, physical, emotional development of the effected children and youth. Thus, schooling should never be terminated. Education’s crucial role has been recognized by the governments and international organisations but what should be done in the 21st century is its inclusion in humanitarian aid agenda on the equal rights with shelter, food, sanitation, hygiene in order to provide a full and effective response. The particular case study of the Afghan refugees in Greece during the European migration crisis and the education in the Oinofyta refugee camp was chosen for the thesis. The empirical experience was gained while volunteering with NGO “IAMYOU” in the Oinofyta refugee camp in the Central Greece which lasted from July till August, 2017 contributed to the thesis and serves as a methodology for it. The thesis has the following hypothesis: humanitarian assistance would not been effective for people in need in particular children, if education was not included as one of its subsets alongside security, shelter, sanitation, hygiene and food provision. The work is divided in three parts in order to present the topic fully and versatile. The first part provides an overview of the fundamental right for education, the legal documents that guarantee it with the special focus on the vulnerable children (refugees and internally displaced children), standards of the provision of education during crises. The assessment of education in emergencies in Afghanistan, Yemen, and Bangladesh-Myanmar are given an in-depth look. The second part emphasizes the reasons that have made people flee from Afghanistan to Europe; policies the European Union has taken in order to handle this influx; the response of Greece, which receives the huge amount of refugees. The Greek refugee camps and the role of humanitarian non-governmental organizations in provision of the emergency relief will be described in the third part. The following research questions are answered: how should education in emergencies be organized to provide support to those people in need; how is it provided on the hot-spot point worldwide and how Greece has been dealing with the exodus of the Afghan refugees during 2016-2017? The analysis of statistical data provided by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and its reports from the meetings of the working groups; international legal documents and their provisions; the United Nations (UN) humanitarian response plans; UNESCO’s assessment documents; the standards for the education in emergencies „The Minimum Standards for Education in Emergencies” of the Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE) and the Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Disaster Response prepared by the SPHERE project, the European Union’s agreements and legislation are used while conducting the research. As the research shows, Afghanistan remains an unsafe country with constant attacks, violence against children and women, massacres by Taliban and the ISIS. But the European Union’s response to it is pretty controversial as it has signed the Joint Way Forward Agreement with the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan which allows the European countries to deport the refugees back to Afghanistan which is far from being secure. What need to be emphasized is that the people arriving are not statistics, but first and foremost human beings, and should be treated as such. Human rights should be taken into consideration, nevertheless the challenges it poses. What can solve this crisis is to finish what is happening in Afghanistan and provide the comprehensive humanitarian aid in the refugee camps including education in emergencies.
