Terrorism has become a widespread issue in our century and its disastrous consequences are impacting the whole world. Nowadays, no one, wherever he is, can say that he is safe from this threat. This research tried to analyze the threat that represents the so-called terroristgroupthe Islamic State, by going through its historical background, its ideology, the context in which it has grown, as well as the damages it has caused worldwide with the attacks it claimed. Its focus wasthe MENA region, and thecase studywas Tunisia as it represents the starting point of what is known as “The Arab Spring” or “The Jasmin Revolution”. Started in 2011, the uprise had a domino effect on the whole Middle East North Africa region, with dramatic consequences, changes, conflicts but also a glimmer of hope for a democratic future. To understand the rise of ISIS, the research shed light on the rise of the Arab Spring in the MENA region and the countries highly impacted. In the case of Tunisia, the research considered the geostrategic situation of this country in a changing world, andanalyzedits impact on the political situation and the major events that the county has experienced since the revolution.Besides, as the media played a major role in the rise of both the Arab Spring and the Islamic state, the researchtried to explain what exactly this role was. In the third part, the researchtried to analyze the effects of the Islamic State on the rise of democracy nowadays, because we can say that the concept of democracyis against their ideology and represents a threat to them.Actually, almost every day media brought news about terrorist attacks claimed by the Islamic State or other terrorist groups that resulted in deaths, victims and countries devastated by these attacks. Until now, it is still a sad reality that the threat of the Islamic State in particular is growing, with the growth of its allies, its recruits, its financial means, the technology used as well as the weapons and propaganda, increasingly becoming sophisticated. In this research, we tried to answer the burning question of whether Islam and democracy are compatiblebecause currently there is a great confusion between Islam and Islamism.A new Islamophobia is born, with a great confusion in people’s mind who have little knowledge of Islam and think that terrorists are Muslims. In the conclusion, wetried to consider solutions to counter terrorism. This phenomenon is threatening all the ideals achievedby humanity, it is allowing the fear to gain ground, and it is killing the hope of a better future. Thus, fighting terrorism has become compulsory if we want democracy to win over extremism. Most countries are trying to find solutions and to fight terrorism in general, and the Islamic State in particular, as it has imposed itself at the head of the world jihad. Indeed, the Islamic State is still recruiting a great number of jihadists worldwide, there are dormant cells in unknown places and the organization still has oil-related financial resources and manages to make its cash grow outside the controlled territories, despite the fight against the financing of terrorism. So, if we want to eradicate terrorism, the research suggestedthat new political and socioeconomic patterns needed to be considered. Economic and political reforms should be established, based on accountability and democratic institutions as well as on political freedom where citizens have a voice in the decisions made about their future. The research also suggested that national strategies should be set up to counter terrorism at all levels where social reality, cultural contexts, economic deprivation as well as the consideration of individual and personal conditions should be taken into account. States and governments, together with unions, NGOs, local institutions and communities should work with Islamic reformists to counter terrorism, explain moderate Islam to youth in Muslim countries and worldwide. The research ended up with a hope for a better, more peaceful future, because global solutionswould constitute a barrier to radicalism and terrorism, and thus common, shared human rights values can be envisioned.
